Are you the type who would speak up if someone cut infront of you? If so then you are among the 54% of people who would speak up if they saw someone cut in line. Take a look at this study that looks at the frequency of objections when someone cut in line.
If you cut in line then 54% of the time someone will object. However if you and a friend cut in line then you’ll see opposition 91.3% of the time. Most of the time the objection came from the person who you cut directly in front of. They also tried putting “dummy line standers” in line who were told not to object. If the cutter cut right in front of the “dummy” then objections were only raised 25% of the time and if in front of two “dummies” then the objections lowered even more to 5%.
The key is to discover the type of person who will not object and then cut in front of them. This drastically reduces the chance that anyone else behind them will object.
Who do you cut in front of then? Here are my suggestions:
- A girl should cut in front of a shy guy or a flirtatious guy. Look for the guy who is looking down at the ground or the guy who seems to be chatting with strangers.
- I would look for someone who might be from a small town. I would think that people from big cities, who are used to standing in line, would be less likely to stand for this.
- I imagine someone who is preoccupied with something might not notice someone cutting. Look for a parent tending to their kids or someone on their cell phone.
- Never cut in front of a group of friends, unless you can charm your way into their group.
