Building a computer for the layman, Part 4

Now let’s say that you decided to buy the parts and build it yourself. I honestly began writing a detailed description of how to do this but then I decided that there was no use re-inventing the wheel, as they say. Tom’s Hardware and Wikibooks are the best guides I have found on building your own computer. It really is only a matter of plugging things where they fit but there are a couple of things you need to watch for when working with electronics. Like watch out for static. Here is a general list of the steps included from Tom’s Hardware:

* Opening the empty case;
* Preparing to fit the components;
* Fitting the motherboard;
* Fitting the RAM, processor, and cooler;
* Installing the graphics card and sound card;
* Fitting the hard disk and floppy drive;
* Installing the floppy and CD-ROM drives;
* Connecting the ribbon cables;
* Powering the drives and motherboard;
* Connecting the cables for the case front panel;
* Final check.

Two final precautions are to watch out for static (I have ruined one before) and double check everything again before you power on for the first time. Nothing worse than smelling smoke right after you push power. It really is not difficult and shouldn’t take more than an hour even your first time. Good Luck!
Part 5 will be for those who didn’t want to build. How to find the best preassembled deals…
