This morning, the Today show had a liguistics professor talking about why everyone says “like” all the time. Unfortunately, she believes that this is not a trend and it is probably here to stay.
There are two reasons why we use filler words such as like, um and uh.
- To prevent gaps in conversation so we aren’t interrupted
- In public speaking, it gives us time to think of what we will say next
