Don’t Forget to Negotiate

I never think of negotiating, because it seems like something you only do when buying a car or at a flea market, but never forget people don’t want to lose your business. Here are some situations that I have been in recently that I should have negotiated:

  • Whenever you are inconvenienced after purchasing something
I was upgraded to a bigger rental truck during my recent move and could have negotiated a cheaper price due to the bigger truck requiring more gas. I learned my lesson and requested a discount when the furniture store called about a delayed delivery date for my new loveseat.

  • Accepting a new job
Even if it is just an HR person that calls to give the good news, even they still have some ability to negotiate. Most (not all) bigger companies do not allow people to negotiate the salary but they are more flexible on the signing bonus.

  • Signing a lease
Everyone negotiates a purchase, but try negotiating your apartment lease also. You may not be successful in getting cheaper rent, but they might be able to throw in free parking or a free storage space.
