Since computer driven cars are nowhere on the horizon, we are still going to have to deal with traffic. Here is a thought-provoking article with a potential solution to traffic jams. This guy made up his mind one day to catch up to the guy in front of him and instead he kept a constant 35 mph while in traffic (as much as possible). He found that everyone behind him were forced to the same speed and were uniformly spaced. The theory is that traffic is mainly caused by selfish people trying to gain more ground.
His theory is nice but really only benefits those behind you. If someone else is nice enough to put this into action before you get to the traffic, then you make out nicely.
