As the entire United States is up for a heat advisory and the sweat is pouring as we enter the office, I wonder if there is a trick to dressing professionally without being afraid of the sun god.
Here are some tips for surviving the summer heat in business casual:
- Wear lighter colors. We’ve been wearing black all winter but black absorbs all the light so switch to white or lighter colors to reflect more light.
- Try cotton or linen. Wool keeps the heat in so get some cotton or linen shirts.
- Lightweight fabric for suits. If you must wear a suit, try a lighter weight fabric. Ask the sales person the weight of the fabric. Lightweight wool will make a difference.
- Seek out air conditioner vents When I first come inside and am waiting for an elevator or a Metro, I actively look to stand next to or under a air conditioning vent. Be the first to get that sweet blast of cool air.
- Wait until the office to put on your shirt. If you tend to sweat a lot in the commute to work, consider carrying your shirt on a hanger and wear the undershirt until you get there. Don’t forget to put it on though.
- Avoid street vents. If you work downtown, then avoid walking over the vents in the sidewalks. Those usually release hot air from the sewer or other tunnels.
Most companies allow you to dress down to short sleeves in the summer, but it is very easy to go too far. Here are some guidelines to help avoid going too casual.
