It has been shown that using a ceiling fan can save you up to 40% in the summer, but many people forget that the ceiling fan can also save about 10% in the winter.
The secret to the ceiling fan is the little switch on the fan. Turn off the fan first. Then there is a switch that makes your fan blades spin in the opposite direction. In the summer we want to push the cold air down on us to create that wind chill effect as seen to the right. So set your blades to go counterclockwise. In the summer, you should be able to put your hand underneath the fan and feel the breeze.
Then in the winter we want to destratify the room by circulating the hot air at the ceiling as seen on the left. So in the winter set your fan blades to turn clockwise. This means the fan won’t be blowing down on you. This is especially helpful in rooms with high, vaulted ceilings where the air can get trapped.
