I have started thinking of my resume as advertisement for myself instead of a history of employment. I have been reading this 6 part piece on how to write a masterpiece of a resume.
One part that stood out to me is about adding a summary section. With the increase in companies going to web-based resume submission, you are competing with a bunch of other people that they have never seen. The people who do the hiring probably just spend a few seconds on each resume, so provide them with a summary of who you are, what you want and what you can do. This will direct their short-attention span to what you want them to know.
